But not so great for women. Many times the rejections were ignored by the men, who would keep presuring to get what they wanted regardless the rejection. And since women were expected to be pleasant, the men could always claim that "when they say no, they mean yes".

If the pleasant rejection worked well for women, they would still use it. If the old ways worked well for women, you would have never seen changes.
