Historically, marriage was arranged. Father decided who their daughters married. So men worked to get the father's approval. Not the woman's.

Relationship have evolved. Now women don't look for providers, but for partners. Of course, when men still pretend to attrack women by offering being providers (and expecting women to be their maids), they fail. Because few women are still looking for that. And even the ones in traditional marriages are divorcing because after trying it, they decide that they don't like it.
