I agree that it was the reduction of mortality rates what produced population growth. But I disagree that resources would be always be expanded by technical progress.
I mean, maybe if they develop technology to make other planets livable, we can experience another population growth like the one in indsutrial revolution. But right now, with just one planet a a lack of renovable energy sources (plus the problem of warming as side effect of energy expending), and the lack of drinkable water for everyone, well, less people being birth might be a better way of reducing stress on limited resources than wars.
It is not about letting people die or killing them. It is about not pushing for births if you can afford the child.
Right now our pupulation limit is set by drinkable water and food production. And the food production is also coopted to produce energy, which now is as important for humanity as food.
So I would say that if population stabilizes, that is a good thing.
