I didn't assume that "all" black people can't afford it. I pointed out that there is huge inequality in income at US. That means that while many people can afford it, other won't be able. Or they would have to give up on other things. Statistically, since there is a racial pay gap, income distribution is skewed and chances are that racialized people would be the ones more impacted. So what I was trying to say is that charging money is hurtful for freedom of expression and would erase black (and asian, and latin) voices.

Maybe you are right and charging money won't impact black people more than white people, but I preffer to be in places where everyone can be, regardless of income.

What I tried to say is that there would be lost voices (and more manipulation). And while no place is safe and I'm sure that you can deal with all the misogynoir, recent bans migth mean that twitter becomes less useful for activism.

Since there are more options, thinking of a back up plan might be good. But it is your choice. You might have a higher opportunity cost of changing platforms. Maybe you have lots of followers and starting on a new platform is too much trouble.

But not all people leave because they can't deal with the hate, racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. Some don't want to give money to Musk and others don't want ot be in places that would ban someone because they can't afford it.

I'm not from US, but this is the income distribution:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household_income_in_the_United_States#Racial_and_ethnic_groups

And if you look at the percentiles, you'll see that most people and families don't reach average. This is the relevant part:

Overall, households headed by Hispanics and African Americans were underrepresented in the top two quintiles and overrepresented in the bottom two quintiles.

So you could say that charging for twitter use is a racist measure, since hispanics and african americans would be overrepresented as the ones that won't be able to afford it or would have more important things to pay with their money.

And who knows?, maybe that is what would allow for a new space to exist. But now the problem is not just that it is not going to be safe, but that many people won't even be allowed to talk.
