I think it has to do with short term sight. When something is not immediately obvious, some people tend to ignore it. For them, the climate change is not "real" because it would take years before it is "visible" and by them, they would have grow used to that.

For them is easier to stay in their confort zone than change to prevent something they don't fully understand. In a way is like those bad relationships, doomed to end, but where people still deny the relationship is over. When they finally realize of the problem, they would become doubly angry and say that "why didn't you warn me?".

Trump offer them lies that they want to hear because he excuses their responsibility.

One thing they care is true. If they don't have food to eat and money to live, they would die before the climate change happens. So for them, climate change is a problem of the future, not having jobs is a now problem.

Offer them jobs that depend on environment and they might change positions.
