In my country women bond over both. And so do men. That is the norm. So I think there is a huge cultural component.

Sometimes, when I read US and UK people talking about gender roles, I get the feeling that there gender norms are a lot more restrictive and rigid than in other countries.

I mean, some of the things that they said are "obligations", here people won't even consider doing. For example: here if you buy a cake instead of baking, no one would think bad of you. You had to bring a cake and you bring one. But there, people would consider the woman "lazy" for not baking the cake herself.

Here women do a lot of activities and go out frequently. They go to the gym, to art classes, to dance, reading clubs... the weird thing is someone who do nothing. And some clubs are mostly women (for example reading and art clubs).

So my take is that women there do a lot of unnecesary things because those things are expected of them. Like cooking for two full days without help for thanksgiving. I mean, what? Here people would either ask for help of other family members, order catering or go out to eat. And if you spend most of your time doing those things, no wonder you are tired to have hobbies or do fun stuff.

To me it sound as if women there should simply stop doing certain things. Sure, men and other women would complain and call you names. But for what I read, they are going to do it anyway because that is how women are treated and they simply would look for an excuse to attack even if you comply. To keep you down. At least if you refuse to do it, you'll get free time for yourself.

And you don't need men to agree with you stoping doing things. You only need to be ok with those things to be undone. So start with all those things that are done for them but get you nothing in return. Let people talk. After some time, some neighbours would notice that you are happy and would do the same because I get the feeling many women there are waiting for any excuse to not do many unnecesary task.

Be brave and do things for fun, others would join.
