It is not just industry. Some men prefer women with make up. When you go to work it is expected that you wear makeup in orden to look “put together”. Women without makeup are considered either lazy, not clean, or not “profesional”. There are exceptions like IT, but make up standards require that women wear some makeup regardless of their own preferences.

And many times makeup “works”. I mean, women who wear makeup usually attract more men/ are praised for their looks more often.

At the end of the day, it becomes part of your “uniform”. It is a way to conform with people expectation of women and to avoid being labeled as “weird”, “unfeminine”, and other things that are penalized by society. It is a conditional choice, you can opt out at a cost.
