I've noticed that you have not mentioned rape or sexual assault. In undafe neighbours, drunk men would grope and harash women. It's what drunk men do.
As a waitress you get to observe this kind of thing. 9 out of 10 drunks are annoying, but their friends would take care of them. 1 out of 10 is a problem and the bounder or the waitress would have to deal with him/her. Maybe it is where I live, but drunks are usually "thrown out" by bouncers. And drunks are usually the ones who end worse if they became violent, because their balance is off and that is very bad in a fight.
Sadly, for a long time, drunks were allowed to grope women without their friends considering there was a problem or the bouncer that he needed to kick the drunk outside.
But here you are trying to say that abuse, rape and murder of women by their partner regardless of how much money they have is not a thing or a problem. And that being free from that is not an advantage. Well, going out at night without fear is freedom. You might not enjoy that, but is freedom. It also allows you to pick jobs that pay better or are compatible with going to class (like waitress). Did I have to deal with going back home late at night? Sure. And I was considered as taking a huge risk because I would be raped. No one considered the guys that did the same were taking the same risk.
Maybe your country is more violent than mine, or maybe here it is considered that rape is a higher risk than a potential fight (by the way, drunks are easy to outrun and tend to trip. They are also loud, so you can avoid).
And again, you had it tough, but you can earn money and improve your economic situation. I would be a woman until I die, so I would never be completely safe from the risk of rape, abuse or murder.
