Or they are average/tall and have been told that if they date shorter men, that they (the women) aren't "femenine". Women are expected to wear heels (it is considered sexy by men) and still be with a taller man. Do the math. Also, many men feel uncomfortable with a taller woman. So it is a two way thing that has nothing to do with "feeling protected" but with social expectations abouth height.
