The 16% of female breawinner is quite high when you take into account that is for the whole population that includes older couples from a time where women weren't allowed to open a bank account (1970). Sure those couples are on their 70s, but they do count for averages.

And then you have also all the men who date younger women who would make less than them because they have less work experience. So when having kids, it is usually the woman who takes a hit in her career since she is the one making less.

Let's face it, men don't like doing domestic chores (most people don't). That means that the 16% is probably the result of men's preferences too.

In fact many men lie about doing the 50%. They start doing less and less until they barely do nothing. At that point, many women divorce/break up.

But it is naive to think that men openly admit that they won't do their fair share of chores. The ones who don't would have plenty of excuses or would try to convince the woman to quit their job and become a house maid, sorry, I mean stay at home wife. XD
