The "dress the man" reminds me of the mother of an ex, who at his birthday, complained to me about how he was dressed telling me "how dare bring him dressed like that" and I told her that his son was an adult, so he dressed himself and she should talk about that with him, since she was his mother. She got quite angry, by the way.
Apparently, some traditional gender roles have the expectation that the wife makes sure that the man is well dressed. They buy clothes, obviously wash and iron them and even select the outfit for the occasion and left it prepared for the men to wear when he comes out the shower.
This same traditional gender roles come with all those expectations for men (to win a lot of money so they can be the "breadwinner" and not have "unmanly" hobbies. So the origin of that asholery is in conservative gender roles that have unfair expectations both for men and women. Basically.
