The problem is that most religious people's actions doesn't support that they care about life. I mean, they are against compulsory organ donation after death. Many are against paying more taxes to support poor children. Many support guns and the death penalty. Many are against compulsory blood and marrow donation. They won't make healthcare free for everyone...

I could go on, but the point is that it is clear that those things would save lives. Lives of people with brain activity and outside of the womb. Lives of babies too. Even lives of phoetuses if we are talking about free healthcare for pregnant women. Yet they don't pursue them and many are even against those measures that would save lives.

So I would say that "lives" is the justification they give to themselves to feel good about what they really care about: control women. Deep down is what it is about since they aren't willing to even donate money so pregnant women can have free access to good hospitals for birth. It is telling.

Fiction is the art to tell lies to show truths. Politics is the art to use truths to tell lies.
