To be fair, only a few were able to do this. Poor people always worked. Women worked as maids, in factories, at the fields, doing crafts... They just weren't paid much. If you look for literature on the topic, you'll see that women have always worked the double shift. The only exception were the rich ones. Those would have even women who would breastfeed for them...
So the advantage now is that women can access to the more interesting, better paid jobs. And that make them independent, which in turn gives them lots of freedom and agency. After all, if you happen to be unhappy at your marriage but you have a job, you can divorce. If you have been a housewife all your life, you might have a more difficult time divorcing even if there is abuse.
