Umm, my guess is that after the first date, he thought that you like him. Then, in the second date, he wanted to feel insecure, so you would make whatever he wanted to get his approval. By the "hints" you mention, it seems that he wanted sex with no commitment, but his mention of being chivalrous was his way to string you along. Some people are manipulative like that.

But you are right that actions should align with words. And I'm glad you saw through that.
