Women weren't allowed to have their own bank account. That means that they couldn't be independent. Using a husband's card means that for her to have money, she needs to marry. Since people need money to live, that meant that she needed to marry just to live at society. And since she needed to marry and remain married just to live, she was forced to please a husband. Not many choices here.

Of course the name in the card mattered. After all, the one whose name is on the bank account and the card can at any time take it from the person whose name is not on the card. And that gives you power over the other person.

That is why allowing women to have their own bank account has changed couple dynamics. No longer the one whose name was on the card can control the other. Now the other can have their own money and card, so they could walk away easily.

But if you seriusly believe the "who cares whose name is on the card?" you can try it yourself. You can put all your bank accounts on your wive's name as long as she allows you to use it. Right?
