You are right, people doesn't assume that they would need to donate blood, marrow or organs to their children. But it happens. Specifically, premature babies might need blood transfusion. Many parents donate willingly, some would do it even before the birth just in case.

So if we have made the demand on the woman, once the child is born, why let it die because the father doesn't want to donate?
